Liberal women - pro trans rights open letter
As women and liberals we wish to make clear that we do not believe there is any conflict between women’s rights and trans rights.
In light of the ongoing campaigns against trans people we want to reassert our strength of feeling, which is in line with Liberal Democrat policy, that trans rights are indeed human rights.
We would reiterate that the Liberal Democrats are committed, and have been every time the matter has come before conference, to supporting trans rights. Since 2015, it has been the party’s agreed position (https://lgbt.libdems.org.uk/en/page/transgender-and-intersex-health-charter) that:
Southwark councillor Anood Al-Samerai has been honoured with this year's Patsy Calton Award for her exceptional contribution to the Liberal Democrats.
Liberal Democrat conference has gone online and we are looking forward to seeing you there! Here are some of our highlights to look out for.
Update, 19/9/2020. Despite the hard work to get it accepted and the backing from various MPs, unfortunately our motion was rejected for conference.
Liberal Democrat Women demand urgent action to save women's jobs Post-Covid. Women are more at risk of losing their jobs and experiencing serious financial difficulty as a result of the crisis, and this risk is heightened for Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, disabled women and LGBT+ women. Liberal Democrat Women have developed a set of practical policies that will protect women's jobs and ensure that women are able to benefit equally from Post -Covid economic stimulus. The full motion is laid out below:
On the 23rd of July we held a Q&A session with Ed Davey and Layla Moran, hosted by Emma Kennedy, and it was a big success. Many have been asking us if it would be available online, and now it is. Click below for the link:
Liberal Democrat Women strongly reject the apparent proposals which would restrict the ability of trans women to use women’s single-sex spaces.
Experience where such bills have been debated and implemented shows that any woman who does not conform to someone else’s idea of what a woman should look or sound like will be subject to challenge. Such legislation, if implemented, is almost always reversed quickly because of the effects on all women. Lesbian women have many stories of how they have been discriminated against and subjected to violence in women’s facilities, simply because of their appearance.
June 16th at 7pm
